- Ministry of Commerce & Industry will release an updated Index of Core Industries (ICI) on July 20, 2026 with a new base year of 2022-23 (replacing 2011-12) and recalibrated industry weights
- This completes the overhaul of ALL of India's major economic metrics โ national accounts (GDP), inflation (CPI/WPI) and industrial performance (IIP) now share updated base years, improving accuracy of growth and inflation measurement
- ICI tracks the output of 8 core infrastructure sectors: coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity
- The ICI carries the single-largest weight (~40%) in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), so it is a lead indicator of overall industrial activity
- Recalibrated weights will better reflect the present structure of the economy and the changed relative importance of each core sector
