Indigenously Developed Silicon Photonics Technology Solutions Launched in Chennai by MeitY

• MeitY Secretary Shri S. Krishnan launched two Silicon Photonics technology solutions at IIT Madras on 24 April 2026: (a) Silicon Photonics Process Design Kit (PDK) for photonics chip manufacturing; (b) Universal Packaged PPIC (Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuit) Test Engine

• Both solutions were indigenously developed at MeitY-sponsored Centre of Excellence for Compound Photonics and Photonic ICs (CoE-CPPICS) at IIT Madras

• The Silicon Photonics PDK has over 50 verified components — a major milestone in India's photonics technology sovereignty and will serve as a shared national facility for the Indian photonics R&D community

• Silicon Photonics technology is critical for high-speed data transmission, AI hardware, quantum communication, and 6G networks — areas where India aims to achieve self-reliance under the Semicon India programme

• This aligns with India's semiconductor and photonics mission under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which aims to build a domestic ecosystem for chip design and manufacturing
