India to Chair UNCTAD's Ninth Session of Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection

• India will chair the 9th Session of UNCTAD's Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Consumer Protection Law and Policy at Palais des Nations, Geneva, from 6–8 July 2026

• The IGE, constituted under the UN Guidelines for Consumer Protection (UNGCP), is the principal intergovernmental platform for cooperation on consumer protection law and policy

• Session highlights: launch of the UN Principles for Consumer Product Safety (adopted by UNGA in December 2025); High-Level Fireside Chat "Why the Principles Matter" with India's participation; Voluntary Peer Review of Argentina's consumer protection law

• Smt. Nidhi Khare, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, invited by UNCTAD to chair the three-day session

• India's showcased achievements: National Consumer Helpline (NCH) facilitated refunds of over ₹91.77 crore across 36 sectors, resolving 1.47 lakh+ grievances pre-litigation in 14 months

• e-Jagriti, an AI-enabled digital platform, enables online complaint filing, virtual hearings, electronic case management, and lets NRIs pursue consumer complaints digitally (cross-border dispute resolution)
