National Task Force on Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in HEIs Completes Field Visits to 30 HEIs

๐ Summary:
- The National Task Force (NTF) on Mental Health of Students and Prevention of Suicides in HEIs has conducted field visits to 30 HEIs across 10 States and 25 stakeholder consultations since May 2025
- NTF was constituted by the Supreme Court on 24 March 2025 (in Amit Kumar & Ors. vs Union of India); on 27 May 2026 the Court allowed time till 31 October 2026 to file the Final Report
- Recent consultations covered students/faculty with disabilities, caste discrimination in higher education, gender and mental health, ST/OBC students, decriminalisation of suicide, and law students
- Three-fold remit: (i) identify the predominant causes of student suicides; (ii) analyse relevant laws, policies and institutional frameworks; (iii) propose reforms for stronger enforcement, accountability and a more inclusive academic environment for marginalised communities
- Former Chief Statistician of India Prof. T.C.A. Anant appointed Technical Consultant for scientific analysis of survey data; an Interim Report (Nov 2025) and Status Reports have been published
