IITM signs MoU with ARIES to set up Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON) station over the Himalayas

• IITM Pune signed an MoU with ARIES Nainital (at Devasthal) on 18 June 2026, for a period of over fifty years, to establish a long-term climate monitoring station
• The station is part of the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences' Mission Mausam initiative
• BCON will monitor meteorological parameters, climate-active trace gases (greenhouse gases and short-lived climate forcers), atmospheric chemistry and soil moisture
• It aims to create a long-term, high-accuracy climate dataset to support frontline climate research and evidence-based policy
• The datasets will validate Earth System Models, including India's first ESM (the IITM ESM); the high-altitude pristine Devasthal site is ideal for baseline atmospheric observations over the Himalayas
