NHAI goes AI way: In-house system deployed to flag faults in highway project reports, track road defects

• NHAI has deployed an in-house AI system to flag deficiencies in Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), analyse road defects, identify faulty signages, and synthesise learnings from past arbitration and project delays.

• The system draws on NHAI's document repository — circulars, the Act, Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes and monthly reports; an official can upload a photo of a defect and the tool checks it against hundreds of guidelines, codes and specifications.

• Faulty DPRs — repeatedly flagged by MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari as a cause of accidents and cost overruns (a Rs 200-300 crore variation on a Rs 2,000 crore project) — can now be checked against IRC codes and MoRTH circulars in advance.

• Supporting tools include a Technical Schedule Analyzer (reviews DPR Schedule B & C technical annexures by severity/completeness), a chat-based agent 'Margsarthi' (live since April 18; 50,000+ queries from ~1,100 users, 40% on circulars), and Kick-Off/MPR Insights that track issues raised in meetings and monthly project reports with citations.

• Access is currently limited to NHAI officials; it will be extended to consultants and contractors after safeguarding against misuse of the Authority's information.
