๐ Summary:
- Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released findings of an Independent Drive Test (IDT) assessing real-time mobile network quality across Delhi Metro, Noida Metro and NCRTC (Namo Bharat RRTS) routes under Delhi LSA
- Tests covered ~490 km of metro routes during 1โ4 April and 14 April 2026, using SIMs of all telecom service providers (TSPs) over 2G/3G/4G/5G with advanced test handsets
- Purpose: verify on-ground Quality of Service (QoS) for consumers and push TSPs to improve services
- Key parameters: Coverage Gap, Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR), Drop Call Rate, Call Setup Time, Speech Quality (MOS), download/upload throughput, latency, jitter, packet drop
- Results showed wide variation โ e.g. average 5G download speeds of 141.28 Mbps (RJIL), 81.72 Mbps (Airtel), 23.94 Mbps (VIL), while MTNL (4G) managed only 4.30 Mbps; MTNL also recorded the worst coverage gaps and dropped calls
๐ฏ UPSC Relevance: GS2/GS3 โ role of a sectoral regulator (TRAI) in protecting consumers and enforcing service standards; telecom infrastructure quality
๐ Prelims Facts:
- TRAI is a statutory body established under the TRAI Act, 1997
- Drive test conducted across ~490 km under Delhi LSA (Licensed Service Area)
- QoS parameters include CSSR, Drop Call Rate and MOS (Mean Opinion Score for speech quality)
๐ Key Term: Independent Drive Test (IDT) โ a field test where live voice and data sessions are run from a moving vehicle using all operators' SIMs to measure real-world network performance against prescribed QoS benchmarks.
