Government, Industry and Academia Converge to Strengthen India's Water Research and Innovation Ecosystem (MAHA on Water)

📌 Summary:

• Ministry of Jal Shakti to organise National Workshop on R&D in Water on 1 June 2026 at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi

• Co-inaugurated by: Union Minister Jal Shakti C.R. Patil; MoS S&T (IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh; MoS Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary; ISRO Chairman/Secretary DoS Dr. V. Narayanan

• Three major launches planned: (1) MAHA on Water (Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas for Water) — joint Jal Shakti + ANRF initiative covering water resources, drinking water, climate resilience, water-use efficiency, with an open call for research proposals; (2) BHARAT-WIN Portal — open call for Startups and MSMEs to develop products and prototypes in the water sector; (3) Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain — participatory digital platform for community-led water conservation, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge

• MoU expected to be signed between Ministry of Jal Shakti and ISRO for satellite-based applications in water resource assessment, monitoring and management; 24 priority studies and cooperation areas already identified

• Technical sessions: groundwater management, irrigation practices, river morphology, floodplain inundation mapping, climate resilience, ecological assessments, dam safety, urban aquifer mapping, application of remote sensing in water governance

• Strategic outlook: workshop will assess impact of last 12 years of water-sector research and discuss priorities for the 16th Finance Commission cycle

• Vision: "Whole of Government and Whole of Society" — Jan Bhagidari, behavioural change, grassroots innovation as drivers of long-term water security
