DDWS Holds National Review with District Collectors on Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 and Solid Waste Management Rules 2026

📌 Summary:

• The Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, held a national review meeting with about 759+ District Collectors/DMs on Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 and Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026
• Jal Jeevan Mission has been extended till December 2028; JJM 2.0 marks a shift from asset creation to sustained drinking-water service delivery, functionality and community ownership
• JJM covers about 5.91 lakh villages, 2.62 lakh Gram Panchayats, over 16 lakh habitations and over 19.41 crore rural households, benefiting nearly 96 crore people
• A District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM) dashboard is to be used to monitor regularity, adequacy, water quality, grievance redressal and Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
• District Collectors were urged to enforce SWM Rules 2026 (segregation, collection, processing, scientific disposal) using powers under the Environment Protection Act; implementation is under review in a Supreme Court PIL
• Saturation of all Tribal and PVTG habitations (under PM JANMAN/DA-JUGA) was targeted by 2027; State-level reviews begin in Maharashtra on 27 May 2026
• India is set to achieve the SDG of universal access to potable drinking water ahead of 2030, by December 2028
