๐ Summary:
- After a global effort led by Monash University, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) will be renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect its multisystem nature
- The old name focused only on the ovaries; many women diagnosed with PCOS do not actually have ovarian cysts โ what appear as cysts are arrested (immature) follicles
- PMOS captures endocrine, metabolic, reproductive, psychological and dermatological features: obesity, dysglycaemia, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea; ovulatory dysfunction, infertility, endometrial cancer risk; depression, anxiety, eating disorders; acne and excess facial hair
- The new name will be introduced globally over the next three years; it will not immediately change diagnostic criteria or treatment protocols
- For India, where PCOS prevalence is high, the renaming could encourage earlier screening for blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure, and a more multidisciplinary, preventive approach โ and help reduce stigma
๐ฏ UPSC Relevance: GS2 โ public health and disease awareness; the importance of accurate medical terminology in diagnosis, communication and reducing stigma; women's health in India.
